 Gynecomastia Patient - Sacramento, California

Sacramento, California - Dr. Delgado informs his patients that gynecomastia is a benign condition in most cases. For an otherwise healthy male with long standing stable gynecomastia, an extensive medical workup is not necessary.

Of concern, is a male breast that shows rapid or unusual changes in size, in particular if only on one side that could indicate a malignancy. Anything that appears suspicious to the gynecomastia specialist may require an evaluation by an endocrinologist.

During an initial consultation for gynecomastia, a medical history will be taken; the surgeon will want to know all medications and/or drugs (both legal and illegal) that have been used, to help in trying to determine the cause of gynecomastia. Unfortunately, the cause of male breast growth usually remains unknown.

The surgeon will also perform a physical exam. If the male breast tissue, which is located around the nipple, is greater than 0.5 cm in diameter, it is considered to be true gynecomastia (not to be confused with cancer). Dr. Delgado points out that men rarely develop breast cancer as mentioned in an article that he co-authored in Medscape.

If the male breast enlargement is caused by fat alone, it is not true gynecomastia, but pseudo-gynecomastia. Pseudo-gynecomastia usually can be treated by liposuction alone, or sometimes it may be treated by CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that freezes fat that is eliminated by the body through the urine over a period of several weeks.

Dr. Delgado will refer any patient to an endocrinologist if he finds anything abnormal. The endocrinologist may order diagnostics tests that may include blood tests that check liver function and hormone levels, urine tests and possibly a mammogram.

Safety for the gynecomastia patient is of utmost importance to Dr. Delgado, if during male breast reduction surgery should the breast tissue look suspicious, he will have it sent to pathology for further evaluation.
